Got a go-to healthy food?

by SARA on February 22, 2011

_MG_7174As Camille will tell you, my “screw it” food is always bread. I look for quality ingredients and whole grains–but there it is. Bread makes my life exponentially better.

Along with indulgences, we all have a healthy craving or two. For example, I’m an apple girl. I eat one almost every morning. I love the pop of sweetness, and I find it keeps me going through those first few hours. I’m not alone with this: Penn State researchers have found that people who eat a whole apple before a meal actually consume 15% fewer calories in that meal than those who don’t (or, even, those who have something else beforehand). The going theory is that the high water and fiber content fill you up–and keep you sated.

My dad’s default is turmeric (a big cancer-fighter). He bakes a little into his bread loaves. Scientists at Tufts University found that people who were given even just a little turmeric experienced less weight gain and lower cholesterol than those who ate exact same diet, save for the turmeric supplementation. What about you? Got a favorite healthful food you find filling and delicious?

Bananas. I have one almost every day: with breakfast, as a snack, pre-workout, post-workout. I also really like milk :)

Love it! For some reason that made me start to crave frozen bananas…or a smoothie!

Would have to be either non-fat plain Greek-style yogurt, oatmeal or nut butter. All three are satisfying and tasty on their own or even with a healthy addition or two.

Non-fat yogurt is another favorite of mine! Have you had it with walnuts and honey? A friend once told me they made it taste just like ice cream–and she was right. And I have so many friends who swear by nut butters. I need to start working them in…

I should really get paid by the avocado people but I love um. I have at least half an avocado a day in all sorts of weird ways. Runner-up healthy foods include cara cara oranges and papayas (with a lime squirt) these days.

Avocados are a pretty perfect food. I just interviewed Bill Yosses, the White House pastry chef, and he waxed poetic about cara cara oranges. Another one of mine I’ve been loving: sweet potatoes. The Union Square farmers market has a stand that sells something like five varieties. I’ve been trying a new kind each day…

Quinoa. I could eat it all day every day. So versatile and so yummy.

And totally satisfying. I’m obsessed with the Manhattan Chili Co. vegetable chili–it’s full of quinoa, so it sticks to your ribs. I can’t get enough.

Kale chips!! Spritzed with olive oil spray and that crazy seaweed sesame blend from chinatown that comes in a million flavors- and lots of edamame in the pod, with smoked salt (or when I’m feeling fancy my truffle salt!) And of course frozen grapes and my apple-almond butter standby……

I’d have to say apples too, but lately I’ve been eating a big, pink, juicy grapefruit everyday! I always find myself reaching for one after lunch or as a snack with a few almonds or some yogurt. Another one would be chickpeas. My friends often call me chickpea because of how many I eat!

Wow. I’m impressed with all of those. (Seaweed, you know, is supposed to be a big fat-fighter: http://sveltegourmand.com/2895_seaweed-surprising-fat-fighter). I need to start freezing grapes again. I used to do it in college; tastes just like sorbet.

How interesting. Me too. (I guess they’re in season, so it makes some sense. But even so, I’m finding citrus really quenching these days.)
