Use these and lose big

As mentioned yesterday, the most straight-forward way to lose weight (and keep it off) is to make sure you’re not consuming more calories than your body needs to function. Here’s how to find out exactly how many calories you’re eating:

Old school: Read food labels and jot down calories on a piece of paper or a small notebook. If your food isn’t labeled, check the USDA’s nutrient database or About.com’s Calorie Count search engine.

High tech: If you have an iPhone, check out LoseIt.com. Each time you eat something, enter it into your phone and this app will tell you how much of your daily calorie budget still remains.

Does this mean I think you have to write down every single thing you eat for the rest of your life? Hardly. Unless you’re completely overhauling a lifetime of poor eating habits, most experts recommend counting calories for a week or two until you have a good idea of what a healthy amount of food looks like. Later on, if you find your skinny jeans starting to feel a little too much like sausage casing, you can count calories again until you’re back on track.
