Snack on this: whole grain chips

by Camille on April 14, 2010

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know whole grains are good for you. As in, really good for you: because they’re high in fiber and crucial nutrients like magnesium, studies show that people who eat three to six servings daily are at least 25% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes, 35% less likely to have heart disease, and have more than a 30% reduced risk for many forms of cancer than those who skimp on whole grain foods.

(Btw, if you’re wondering what makes a grain “whole,” it just means that it hasn’t been processed to remove the bran and the germ, which gives foods like bread and pasta a “lighter”–and less filling–texture and taste).

But if you’re not much of a bread or cereal eater (like me), or don’t eat gluten because of celiac disease or other digestive problems, you might find it hard to get your fill. If so, may I make a suggestion? I have been loving riceworks chips, which are made with whole grain brown rice. If you like slightly spicy food, try the Sweet Chili ones–I honestly can’t get enough of them.

Now, don’t get me wrong: these chips aren’t a replacement for oatmeal, for example, or brown rice; the closer food is to the state it was when it was harvested, the better. But if you’ve got a craving for something crunchy that’s relatively low in calories (about 140 for 10 chips), they’re worth a try. (Bonus: they’re vegan and celiac-friendly, too).
