When I was younger, one of my relatives used to do what she called the “caveman diet”, which meant she ate little more than meat, legumes and vegetables–no grains, dairy or anything processed. (Interestingly enough, this diet is coming back into style, according to the New York Times).
I recently asked my relative why she chose this plan (and still occasionally does when she’s looking to shed pounds). “There are no complicated lists of low-fat, low-GI foods to follow,” she explained. “I can handle it because it’s easy.”
That may explain why it works for her. A new study from Indiana University and German researchers found that the more complicated people think a diet plan is, the sooner they’re likely to drop it. Researchers studied 390 women and discovered that those only required to follow a specifically prescribed meal plan fared better than dieters who had to look up the “point values” of foods and keep track of how much they ate.
Of course, I know some people prefer plans like the more complex of the two mentioned above, and that’s totally fine–whatever works. But if you’ve had trouble sticking to diets in the past, look for something simple.

Yes, the paleo diet is easy. Foods are either in or out. The quantity of each of the in foods is totally up to you, though if trying to lose weight one may have to minimize the fruit.
In: meat, fish, eggs, nuts, vegetables, fruit, and berries.
Out: grains, dairy, potatoes, beans, sugar, and anything fake.
Oils: Only nut (e.g. coconut, walnut, almond) or fruit (e.g. olive, avocado) oils are in. All oils made from seeds are out.
