We’re still getting a lot of traffic on last week’s detox foods post, so I thought I’d come back today with some more ideas that have crossed my desk lately. Thinking about what I pulled together, I’m wondering if my subconscious is telling me to go forage for some kind of crunchy salad. Check out the list to see what I mean.
*Papaya: Traditionally used for everything from ulcers to heartburn to indigestion, papaya contains papain, a natural digestive enzyme that helps break up foods that may be irritating the stomach.
*Garlic: Similar to broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables, garlic is high in sulfer which, in addition to anti-cancer properties seems to have some antibacterial effects (both are documented in clinical trials).
*Apples: Not only are apples high in digestion and metabolism-promoting fiber, they’re also replete in pectin and other enzymes that gently aid in breaking down and ridding the body of potentially irritating food particles.
*Broccoli: Researchers at Johns Hopkins found that a compound in broccoli triggers the body to produce sulforaphane, a substance that in turn releases phase II enzymes, known for their ability to detoxify cancer-causing chemicals. Broccoli also has significant anti-microbal properties.
*Olive oil: In terms of detox, olive oil is a rich source of polyphenols, antioxidants that have strong antibacterial properties. (In fact, Spanish scientists recently found that virgin olive oil could knock out eight different strains of the ulcer and the stomach cancer-causing bug H. pylori.)
*Avocado: Exceptionally high in fiber, avocados are a great gentile-on-the-stomach digestion aid. In addition, their rich store of potassium will help regulate your electrolytes (which will reduce bloating), and the vitamin K they contain is thought to help with liver health.
